Pre-wash scalp serum

You're losing hair in two places.

Most products only work on one.

Some of what you lose comes out at the root, where hormones decide and no bottle argues. The rest snaps along the strand, and that half is not hormonal at all. A two-minute step before you wash, twice a week, for the half that is still yours.

Try this first

Before you read anything else, go and get your hairbrush. This is faster than reading the rest of this page and it tells you more. Pull the hair out and spread it on something pale. Look at the ends.

If the second pile is not small, keep reading. That is the half this bottle is for, and almost nothing else on the shelf is aimed at it.

The ten-second test

Two piles. Two different problems.

Full length, pale bulb

That hair came out at the root. That is shedding, and this product does not change it.

Came out at the root

Shorter, no bulb

That one snapped along its length. It was still attached to your head this morning.

Broke along the strand

The Second Loss

Two losses. Only one of them is yours to fix.

At the follicle

Estrogen falls, the growth phase shortens, follicles gradually produce finer hair. This part is hormonal and no serum changes it. It is also why your bloodwork came back normal: what changed is how sensitive the follicles are, and a blood panel does not measure that.

Not yours to fix

Along the strand

Hair fiber reaches its thickest around forty and gets thinner after, with fewer cuticle layers and lower tensile strength. Thinner fiber snaps under a brush that never used to break it. Every strand lost mid-length is volume gone without losing a follicle.

What this bottle is for

Capsules, drops, the stamp with tiny needles, the roller, the wand, the oils. Every one of them is an argument about how to reach the follicle, which is the half you cannot change without a prescription. The other half has been sitting there the whole time.

How it works

Clear. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and that one letter is the point on a scalp. Beta means oil-soluble, so it works inside an oily follicle opening instead of rinsing over the top. Piroctone olamine holds down the yeast behind flaking and itch, which cannot make its own fats and lives on the ones it is handed.

Keep. Panthenol does not coat the hair. It penetrates into the cortical protein of the fiber, hydrogen-bonds with the hair's own protein, and raises the strand's break stress and elasticity above untreated hair. A more elastic strand bends where a brittle one snaps.

Opposite direction, identical slot.

Clear, then keep

Same two minutes. Opposite direction.

A pre-wash oil

Puts fat onto the scalp and leaves it there until you wash.

Feeds it

Clear & Keep

Lifts the oil and residue off, then rinses away with your shampoo.

Takes it off

What to expect

What happens, week by week

The part most brands will not put in writing, which is precisely why you should hold us to it.

Week 2

Your scalp

The fastest thing to change and the easiest to feel. Less flaking on your shoulders, less of the itch you stopped noticing a year ago, and it does not go waxy again by day three.

Week 4

Your brush

Run the ten-second test again. You are not looking for less hair overall. You are looking for fewer short pieces without a bulb. The full-length strands with the pale bulb are shedding and this does not change those. The short ones snapped, and those are the ones on the table.

Week 8

Your ends and your ponytail

Less snapping when you brush it out. Fewer broken flyaways standing up along the part. The ponytail feels slightly less like it is getting away from you.

That is the entire honest arc. No before-and-after photograph, and no number we invented.

The long version is all here. Nothing is hidden and nothing is padded out to make the page look serious.

Six things worth knowing before you buy anything else
  • The pile in your brush is not one problem. Most women have never been told there are two kinds of hair in there, which is why the last four things you bought were all aimed at the same one.
  • Your hair probably is not damaged, and that is exactly why it is breaking. Damage is what bleach and a daily flat iron do. If you do neither, you already ruled that out and you were right to. What almost nobody explains is the thing that happens instead after forty-five.
  • There is a reason the clarifying scrub worked for about a week. "helps remove buildup, but it comes back within the same amount of time." That is not a bad product. It is a one-off clean of something that comes back on a schedule.
  • Two minutes, twice a week, and nothing at all on the other five days. Sixteen applications in the bottle, on dry hair, before the shower you were taking anyway. Compare that to what you abandoned last time: five minutes of massage in four sections, every day, for three months minimum.
  • Nothing to shed through. "I've read about the shedding phase… honestly it makes me nervous." This is a cosmetic. It does not touch the growth cycle, so there is no phase to get through.
  • One price, once. There is no subscribe option on this product, deliberately. It is the single loudest complaint in every review thread in this category.
Who this is for, and who it is not for

It is for you if

  • You are somewhere between forty-five and sixty and your part, your ponytail or your brush changed without one dramatic moment you could point at.
  • The pile in your brush has short pieces in it with no pale bulb on the end.
  • You have already tried serums, growth shampoos or supplements and want to know why they did not work before spending again.
  • You want something that fits into a wash you are already doing, not a new daily ritual.

It is not for you if

  • What you want is new hair. This does not do that and it will disappoint you.
  • Your loss came on suddenly in patches, your hairline is receding in a shiny band, or you are losing eyebrow hair. See a doctor before you buy anything at all, from us or anyone else.
  • You want a result in a week. The scalp moves in about two. The brush takes about four.
How to use it
  • 1. Part dry hair into four sections. Dry, not damp. This goes on before water, not after.
  • 2. Apply along each parting. On the scalp, along the partings, not down the lengths.
  • 3. Work it in for two minutes. Fingertips or the applicator. Fingers miss the back of the crown almost every time.
  • 4. Shampoo and condition as normal. It rinses out. Nothing stays on your head.

Twice a week, on the two wash days you already have. Sixteen applications per bottle, which is eight weeks. Nothing on the other five days. If you colour your hair, wait until your next wash rather than the same day as the salon.

The evidence, and what it does not cover

On the two actives that clear

A 2025 cohort study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested a pre-wash gel built on salicylic acid and piroctone olamine, plus zinc PCA, applied to dry hair, massaged in and rinsed off once a week alongside a medicated cleanser. Dandruff fell from 2.45 to 1.10 and greasiness from 2.60 to 1.40 by week four, and by week sixteen 18 of 20 people showed marked improvement in dandruff and 20 of 20 in greasiness. No adverse events.

What that study is and is not: twenty people, no comparison group, no randomisation, in people who had moderate to severe seborrheic dermatitis, four in ten of them men, average age 27. It measures scalp condition, not hair growth, and the gel was never tested on its own. We are showing it to you because it is the closest published work to what is in this bottle, not because it proves what this bottle will do for you.

On the fiber

Hair shaft diameter falls after roughly age 40 to 45 in women, and thinner fiber carries fewer cuticle layers and lower tensile strength. Revised by other scientists before publication, and consistent across several independent papers.

On panthenol

A 2026 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science traced panthenol into the cortical protein of the hair fiber, showed it hydrogen-bonds with hair protein, and measured higher break stress and elastic modulus than untreated control.

Every source above belongs to the ingredients and the format, not to this product. We have not run a study on this bottle. When we have, we will publish it with its sample size and its design, the same way.

If you are already four months into something else

You started a treatment three or four months ago. You are still on it. You are doing everything right. It has not visibly done anything yet, you have been told to give it six months to a year, and every wash day in between is its own small event.

Nothing here asks you to stop. This does not act on the growth cycle, so it does not compete with what you are on, and there is no shedding phase to go through. It works on the two things that move on a scale of weeks while you wait out the thing that moves on a scale of seasons. Check with your doctor if you are already using a prescribed topical.

You are allowed to want your hair to look better this month and still be patient about next year.

What is in it, and what is deliberately not
  • Salicylic acid. Beta hydroxy acid, oil-soluble, clears residue from inside the follicle opening rather than over the top of it.
  • Piroctone olamine. Holds down the yeast behind most flaking and itch.
  • Panthenol. Provitamin B5. Goes into the fiber and raises its break stress and elasticity.

Left out on purpose

  • Oils and butters. They are the exact fats the yeast behind flaking lives on. A pre-wash oil and this bottle occupy the same two minutes and do the opposite job.
  • Silicones. Coat the strand rather than going into it, and build up on the scalp between washes.
  • Added fragrance. No upside on a scalp that is already flaking or itching.

The real questions

I've tried every serum, growth shampoo and supplement out there and it was all a waste of money. Why would this be different?

Because of what they were aimed at. Almost everything in this category works on the follicle, and the follicle is under hormonal control that a cosmetic does not change. That is not a knock on those products, it is a mismatch. This one works on the two things that are actually within reach: the state of the scalp, and the strength of the fiber you already have. Run the ten-second brush test above and you will see in about a minute which of the two has been doing more damage in your case.

I've read about the shedding phase and it makes me nervous. Does this cause that?

No. That shedding phase belongs to treatments that act on the hair growth cycle. This is a cosmetic used on the scalp and the strand, and it does not touch the cycle, so there is nothing to shed through. It is also not a substitute for anything your doctor has you on, and it is fine alongside most routines. Check with them if you are already using a prescribed topical.

My doctor said my bloodwork is normal. So is something actually wrong?

Your bloodwork probably is normal, and you were still right to keep asking. In most women with pattern thinning the hormone levels in the blood are within range. What changed is how sensitive the follicles are to those hormones, and a standard blood panel does not measure that. You were not imagining it, and the test simply does not look at the thing you were asking about.

Is there a real effect past a few months, or am I mostly paying for the feeling of doing something?

Fair question, and the most common one in this category for a reason. The honest split: the scalp side is maintenance, so it clears and if you stop, residue reaccumulates, exactly like the scrub you have probably already tried. The fiber side is cumulative in one direction only, because a strand that did not break is still on your head. Neither of those is new hair, and we are not going to tell you it is. If eight weeks in you cannot tell the difference, the Two-Wash Promise refunds you.

How is this different from the pre-wash oils?

Direction. Most pre-wash treatments are oils that stay on the scalp until you wash them out, and the yeast behind most flaking lives on exactly that kind of fat. This one takes oil and residue off instead of adding more. Same two minutes, same rinse, opposite job.

Can I use it if I colour my hair?

Yes. It goes on the scalp along the partings, not down the lengths, and it rinses out before you condition. If you have just been to the salon, wait until your next wash rather than the same day.

Do I have to subscribe?

No, and you cannot. There is no subscription on this product. One price, one charge, nothing renews.

Who should not buy this?

If your hair loss came on suddenly in patches, if your hairline is receding in a shiny band, or if you are losing eyebrow hair, see a doctor before you buy anything. If what you want is new hair, this is not that product and it will disappoint you.

Go and look at that brush one more time

The short pieces without a bulb will keep collecting whether or not you buy anything, because thinner fiber keeps snapping under a brush that has not changed. That is not a countdown and it is not a scare tactic. It is just what happens on a Tuesday, quietly, in a way that never arrives as one dramatic moment you could point at.

Eight weeks from now you will either have been measuring that pile, or you will still be under the bathroom light trying to decide whether your part looks worse than it did last month.

Two minutes. Twice a week. Sixteen applications in the bottle.
